A tanker truck driver has been sentenced to 36 years in prison for causing a fiery crash that killed four people on a South Florida interstate in 2005.
Authorities say Flavio Santisteban was sentenced Monday in Broward County court. He was found guilty of four counts of vehicular homicide in September.
Authorities say he was speeding on Interstate 595 when the truck loaded with 9,000 gallons of gasoline flipped onto another car. Both vehicles slid along a guardrail until sparks ignited the fuel.
Gloria Halpern, the 56-year-old mother of NHL hockey player Jeff Halpern, died in the February 2005 accident with three relatives. Family members later sued the truck driver and his employer.
