Lancaster Foods announced on Friday, June 25 that it is recalling bagged spinach distributed under the names Krisp-Pak Ready to Eat Hydro-Cooled Fresh Spinach, Krisp-Pak, Lancaster Fresh, Giant and America's Choice due to testing that revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria can cause severe illness in pregnant women and persons with compromised immune systems. The recall originally was confined to North Carolina, but Lancaster Foods has now expanded to bagged spinach sold in North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The recall includes eight, 10 and 12-ounce bags of spinach with "best enjoyed by" dates of June 19 through June 27.

Lancaster Foods advises consumers to throw out the spinach, save the package, and call 800-247-8125 for information on refunds.

While the bagged spinach recall does not include Massachusetts at this point, the recall has expanded throughout the northeast and many Boston-area grocery stores carry Lancaster Foods products. Consumers with questions can call the toll-free number.
